This film investigates the parallel stories of collapsing Pacific salmon populations and how biologists and engineers engage in audacious experiments to shore up their numbers. Each of our efforts to save salmon has involved replacing their natural cycle of reproduction and death with a radically manipulated life history. Our once great runs of salmon are now conceived in laboratories, raised in tanks, driven in trucks and farmed in pens. The program goes beyond the ongoing debate over how to save an endangered species. In its exposure of a wildly creative, hopelessly complex and stunningly expensive approach to managing salmon, the film explores possible paths to salmon recovery.

On Memorial Day weekend, PBS will unite the nation with an evening that has become an American tradition. The NATIONAL MEMORIAL DAY CONCERT honors the service and sacrifice of the men and women in uniform, their families at home and all those who have given their lives for our country. Broadcast live from the West Lawn of the US Capitol, the concert features an all-star line-up in performance with the National Symphony Orchestra and is co-hosted for the seventh time by Emmy Award- winner Gary Sinise and Tony Award-winner Joe Mantegna.

During the early days of baseball, fans experienced the game without the benefit of an umpire’s colorful hand signals: the defiant fist as the perfect pitch crossed home plate, the cross-hand sweep as the runner slid into home, and the dramatic fist pump as the runner, ball and baseman converged at first base. The umpire’s voice, usually drowned out by the screams of thousands of excited fans, served as the only means to signal a ball or strike or to call a player safe or out. SIGNS OF THE TIME explores the origins of baseball’s hand signals and the pioneers responsible for this pivotal innovation.

One of the first things I noticed after moving to Columbus, people here really enjoy bike riding. It’s even more obvious now that the weather has changed. This winter I was watching a teleconference that previews programs available to PBS stations in the spring and summer. As a programmer in this city I can’t tell you how excited I was to see a new program come on the screen that was all about bike riding! So for all you bike riders I see out there everyday here’s your show, and I’ll be watching the viewer numbers so you better not let me down!

“Pedal America” begins on Sunday, May 20 at 1:00pm on WOSU TV. In each episode, co-hosts Ira David Levy and Kati Lightholde cycle through a variety of North American locales – from national parks to urban centers – while emphasizing bicycle safety and the health benefits of this affordable and eco-friendly activity. As you can see from the preview there’s a bit of everything for the cycling enthusiast. However if you’re not that into bicycling, I encourage you to watch anyway. The places they go and the people they meet are every bit as entertaining for the spectator as they are for the cyclist.

The series will showcase the best and safest bike routes in the country. You’ll watch communities develop bike trails, bikeways and bike infrastructure. There’s even a segment on basic bicycle repair and maintenance tips. I hope you’ll take a look at this new series and if you’re out riding set you DVR to watch when you get back in.

“Pedal America” airs Sunday’s at 1:00pm beginning May 20 on WOSU TV, with an encore presentation Monday mornings at 4:30am.
