Bernstein, Gershwin and Coldplay

WOSU TV has always offered a variety of musical experiences over the years and this New Year’s Eve will be no exception.  From Lawrence Welk, to the New York Philharmonic and Coldplay to Paul McCartney you should find something that gets those feet moving!

LAWRENCE WELK presents a special New Year’s program filled with holiday nostalgia like “Auld Lang Syne”.  You’ll also get a chance to relive Rose Bowl memories with a salute to the Rose Bowl and Rose Parade with songs like “Before The Parade Passes By”, and “Everything’s Coming Up Roses”.

Following Welk at 8pm, The New York Philharmonic kicks off their New Year’s Eve concert, LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER, with Bernstein’s Overture to Candide.  The Philharmonic also promises to spend some time the the gang and the Symphonic Dances from West Side Story.  It can’t be New Year’s without a little Gershwin and the orchestra treats us to two Gershwin masterpieces: his Piano Concerto in F with guest artist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and Rhapsody in Blue.

If you’re looking for something a little  more rockin’ to bring in the new year, join us for a special AUSTIN CITY LIMITS featuring Coldplay taking the stage for 90-minutes playing selections from Mylo Xyloto and as well as some of your favorite hits.  This is Coldplay’s second appearance on the Austin City Limits stage.  Executive Producer Terry Lickona says, “We decided to go big with Coldplay – really big. So we came up with the idea of celebrating New Year’s Eve with a 90-minute special. All the hits plus their brand new songs,”  “It’ll be a great way to kick off 2012!”  The folks at ACL will provide you with a countdown to 2012 so you won’t miss any of the New Year.

Finally Paul McCarney and friends keep the party going with PAUL MCCARTNEY: LIBRARY OF CONGRESS GERSHWIN PRIZE FOR POPULAR SONG: IN PERFORMANCE AT THE WHITE HOUSE.  Sir Paul performs, along with a sampling of the countless musicians and performers that were influenced by the most enduring pop genius and band of all time.  A great night of music to bring in the New Year!
