Position Summary
The Marketing and Communications Director is responsible for increasing regional awareness and enhancing support for WOSU Public Media branded multiple channels, distributions streams, programs, initiatives, and activities.
Detailed Job Description
Increase regional awareness and enhance support for WOSU Public Media through:
- Strategic Communication – Collaborate with WOSU programming, fundraising, digital media, content and other areas to determine key messages and values, and articulate, develop, and integrate into an annual strategic plan that meets stated goals. Serve as organizations brand manager, ensuring creative materials developed across WOSU adhere to approved brand standards and consistency of tone.
- External Communications – Oversee external messaging for consistency in content and branding on-air, on the web, in print, email, and social media. Manage monthly print/online member magazine Airfare. Create paid media and marketing plans as budget allows. Provide support for a variety of fundraising efforts.
- Internal Communications – Create and implement effective internal communications strategies to increase organizational effectiveness. Provide support and assistance to the Friends of WOSU advisory board. Work in collaboration with University Communications as appropriate.
- Media & Public Relations – Cultivate and maintain mutually beneficial relationships between WOSU and its constituencies, including other media organizations. Serve as spokesperson as required. Lead coordination of specific outreach and fundraising events and activities.
- Provide day to day management of Communications Department staff, serve as part of WOSU Leadership Council, WOSU Advancement team, OSU Communications Council, etc. Manage departmental budget. Supervised by General Manager.
Duties Description
50% – Collaborate with WOSU programming, fundraising, digital media, content and other areas to determine key messages and values, and articulate, develop, and integrate into an annual strategic plan that meets stated goals. Oversee external messaging for consistency in content and branding on-air, on the web, in print, email, and social media.
15% – Manage monthly print/online member magazine Airfare. Create paid media and marketing plans as budget allows. Provide support for a variety of fundraising efforts.
15% – Create and implement effective internal communications strategies to increase organizational effectiveness. Provide support and assistance to the Friends of WOSU advisory board. Work in collaboration with University Communications as appropriate.

Experience
Bachelor’s degree required in Communications, Public Relations, Journalism or related field; 5 years minimum professional experience; specific experience creating and implementing successful integrated marketing communications plans, managing diverse media communications functions including an understanding of online, mobile and social media marketing within a nonprofit environment; at least two years experience managing staff, volunteers and/or interns required.
Must have excellent project management skills and the ability to plan and organize multiple projects simultaneously with demonstrated success in strategic planning, communications planning, marketing and media relations within a nonprofit organization. Ability to meet deadlines, create and manage project budgets and work collaboratively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders.
Excellent presentation skills are expected with an ability to communicate effectively to a wide range of target audiences – WOSU staff, media contacts, board members, major donors, University leadership and a variety of community groups.
Demonstrated initiative, creativity, flexibility, resourcefulness and calculated risk taking, while having an understanding and appreciation for the goals of public media in serving the central Ohio community.
Additional considerations relevant to the position include experience in grant-writing, evidence of building project collaborations, knowledge and experience in media content development, on-air fundraising experience, design skills and level of community involvement.
